The biggest numbers came from balance sheets. In WSJ · Technology, Q3 revenue rose 26% to $64.60 billion. But capex of $34.91 billion was larger than operating cash flow, leaving a deficit of about $2.12 billion. The 10-Q lists roughly $810 billion in commitments, most of them non-cancelable. An oil spike on the same day makes it hard to say how much of the selloff was about Meta.

The strain is sharper at the neoclouds. CNBC · Technology shows Nvidia financing its own customers. It has $36 billion in off-balance-sheet backstops and residual-value guarantees capped at $105 billion on OpenAI's Pike County campus. CoreWeave's five-year CDS reached a record 1,194.5bp on October 15. A week later, CNBC · Technology: a 504-GPU container built to speed up deployment. The next day CoreWeave fell 10.1%, and Huang said capital, not chips, is what limits growth. Beyond GPUs, last30days ·.

Agents get storefronts, codebases and robots

In Financial Times · AI, approved agents such as ChatGPT, Gemini and Meta's Muse can buy for customers without ever seeing payment details. Separately, the Ninth Circuit lifted the injunction Amazon had won against Perplexity's Comet agent. Microsoft's Magentic Marketplace simulation offers a warning: buyer agents tended to accept the first acceptable offer.

Anthropic ran its own abliteration of GLM-5.3: about $4,400 of compute cut refusals of harmful cyber requests from 95% to about 6%, and exploit skill stayed intact. Simon Willison. 3. Convovo study: Grok 4.7 picked Republicans and GPT-6.1 Sol picked Democrats in nearly 500 midterm races

Through their developer APIs, with web search on and a prompt that banned hedging, Grok 4.7 backed the Republican in 92% of races and GPT-6.1 Sol backed the Democrat in 97%. The two models agreed in fewer than 10% of races. Both often went against the district's lean: GPT backed the Democrat in 57 of 67 heavily Republican districts, and Grok backed the Republican in 47 of 72 deep-blue districts.

  4. BBC's Blue Planet III keeps murky, unpolished footage to show audiences it was not made with AI

Producers kept footage they would once have cut, including poor visibility, particles in the water and human equipment in shot, so that imperfection works as a visible sign that the animals were really filmed. The Guardian reports that the no-generative-AI assurance from Bootle is a first for the BBC.

  5. Judge dismisses Penske Media and Chegg antitrust suits over Google AI Overviews

Judge Amit Mehta ruled that the long-standing exchange, in which publishers allowed indexing and Google sent traffic, was an expectation and not an agreement. He found publishers let Google crawl their sites because it served their own interests. He had earlier dismissed an Arkansas newspapers' class action on the same grounds, though he said he sympathized with publishers whose work is reused without payment. A separate adtech suit brought by publishers is still going ahead.

Nvidia's August 8-K caps residual value guarantees on OpenAI's roughly 4.25 GW Pike County, Ohio campus at $105 billion, payable only if OpenAI defaults. A $500 billion private-credit framework with Apollo, BlackRock, Blackstone, Brookfield, Goldman Sachs and KKR has Nvidia guarantee up to 25% of financed chips' residual value.

  9. UK commits £100m to new AI Biosecurity Lab as OpenAI and Anthropic pledge up to £200m in model credits

Most of the lab's resources will come from AI developers. The government is putting in £100m. OpenAI is pledging £100m in compute and credits through its Rosalind Biodefense programme, and Anthropic up to £100m in credits plus technical support. Google DeepMind is offering Gemini access and research collaborations, and Basecamp Research is contributing AI-biology models. Because the credit pledges are capped amounts, what they are actually worth depends on how much the lab uses them.

  12. Character.ai files for Chapter 11 with Disney as $20 million opening bidder, topping a year of AI shutdowns that includes Sora, Atlas and Relay

Character.ai filed for Chapter 11 in October with assets and liabilities each listed at $50M–$100M. The filing came about two years after Google reportedly paid $2.7 billion to license its technology and rehire its founders. The company named Disney as stalking-horse bidder at $20 million, and the app stays online during the sale. Thirty-one states and DC have objected that the bidding rules favor Disney. They point to a $21.7M qualifying threshold for rival bids, a $700K break-up fee and liability releases for Disney. A hearing is set for October 30.

It plans brand campaigns, foreign-language audiobook voiceovers and fan apps, including a twin that coaches users in real time. It would take a cut of revenue and challenge unapproved uses. Its campaigns are still pilots.

  15. Armin Ronacher says decades of bad software are catching up as AI exposes critical PHP flaws and floods open-source maintainers

Emergency PHP releases fixed two flaws, CVE-2026-109618 and CVE-2026-109619, both rated CVSS 9.2. They are remote code execution bugs that need no authentication. They stem from how PHP handles out-of-memory conditions and from global state that persists across requests, and they affect versions back to PHP 5.4.0. The security firm Calif reportedly found one using an OpenAI model, and Wiz found both independently. An exploitation attempt was detected before the fixes shipped, and CISA and the FBI urged immediate patching.

  16. FBI weighs economic espionage case against OpenAI engineer accused of bugging executive conference room

The Wall Street Journal, citing a law-enforcement official, reports that the FBI is exploring an economic espionage case. Investigators are reportedly considering whether Alfozan gathered information to offer the Saudi government even if no one recruited him. So far he faces only one count of intercepting or trying to intercept oral communications. That charge carries up to five years in prison and a $250,000 fine, and the Justice Department release calls the case a counterintelligence priority without alleging espionage.

  17. Nvidia unveils DSX POD container data center and OpenShell agent runtime at GTC Berlin as neocloud stocks fall

DSX POD packs seven Vera Rubin NVL72 racks (504 GPUs) into one container of about 28 tonnes. Partners build it from Nvidia's reference design, and deliveries start in early 2027. Huang's case for it is speed: he values a 1-gigawatt site at about $50 billion and says a three-month delay costs roughly $10 billion in revenue. Moving assembly and burn-in into the supply chain is meant to shorten the time from equipment arrival to production. The keynote put this at four to five months cut to about one.

  18. Walmart opens its stores to AI shopping agents through an MCP gateway while Amazon keeps blocking them

Walmart's Agent Gateway, announced 21 October 2026, lets approved agents such as ChatGPT, Gemini and Meta's Muse search inventory and complete purchases at Walmart and Sam's Club. Agents never see payment details, and each agent gets its own profile. The customer chooses whether to approve each purchase or set a spending limit. Amazon, by contrast, has been blocking agents, which reports date to September or mid-October.
