Meta has released weights for huggingface.co, an 816B-parameter mixture-of-experts model that activates 42B parameters per token. It handles text, image, video and audio, and it has a 1M-token context window. The release reverses Meta's April decision to keep Muse Spark closed. Artificial Analysis scores it 39. That makes it the top US open-weights model, one point behind the closed Muse Spark 1.2, but ninth among 118 open-weight models overall. Meta's own model card shows Kimi K3 ahead on Terminal-Bench 2.1 (85.0 vs 76.4). Apple's MLX tests TechCrunch AI at about 15.7 tokens per second on two machines and 36.7 on four. The 512GB configurations needed for the two-machine setup arrive in late October. The license requires attribution and bans military use. Meta's safety report is still pending.

NVIDIA's NVIDIA Generative AI is smaller: 120B parameters with 12B active, open weights, data and recipes, and an NVFP4 checkpoint that runs on one H200 or DGX Spark. It scores 26 on a general leaderboard, against 58 for Claude Opus 5.5. Its wins over frontier systems come from narrow fine-tunes whose tasks were never published, so it is best treated as a base for building specialized agents.

Big models on local machines

Nvidia's Verge · AI offer up to 128GB of unified memory. StorageReview measured Qwen3.6-35B-A3B at 89.2 tokens per second at 64K context. On smaller models, an RTX 5090 laptop was 2.3× faster. Recall and other Copilot+ features are missing at launch.

Agents inside everyday tools

OpenAI's Verge · AI now has a work mode that fills forms, sends messages and downloads files in signed-in sessions. It arrives two months after OpenAI closed Atlas. Users set permissions site by site, but there is no complete log of what the agent did, and a poisoned page can now lead to real actions. r/AISEOInsider launched at DevDay on September 29 with pages several people can edit at once. OpenAI's help article says automatic 'Keep updated' pages are not available at launch, even though the feature page describes them. Amazon's TechCrunch AI recorders cost $74.99 and $99.99. They lead into an $11.99-a-month tier that links conversations to Gmail, calendars and Amazon Shopping.

Creator projects filled in the rest of the picture. Julian Goldie's Agent OS r/AISEOInsider. A r/AISEOInsider promises each agent its own cloud computer, which matches Hermes's documented Docker, SSH and Modal backends. Hermes also has a new experimental plugin for running Claude on a Pro or Max subscription. A r/AISEOInsider credits Claude-run publishing with 1,300 daily clicks for an unnamed site, but several of its tactics conflict with Google's documentation and its scaled-content-abuse policy.

Robots: strong on quizzes, slow on arms

Google's Google DeepMind scored 87% on ERQA, an embodied-reasoning test Google built. On AA-Robotics v0.1, where models control a real arm, it placed third of five with 55.3, behind GPT-6 Astra's 69.4, and averaged about 52 minutes per task. Its clearer result is offline work: simulations built from a single photo raised a fine-tuned model's real-robot success from 56% to 75%.

One-prompt software

Simon Willison used Claude Opus 5.5 to generate Simon Willison, a game where two phones exchange events as audio tones, with checksums and retransmission. Bluesky's TechCrunch AI now builds games, polls and websites, but Similarweb estimates Bluesky's monthly actives fell to about 10.4M.

Tutors, tests and teachers

A Practical AI highlighted a Turkish field experiment. Unrestricted GPT-4 raised practice scores 48% but cut later exam scores 17%, while a tutor that gave hints instead of answers avoided the harm. OpenAI marked Brazil's Teachers' Day with a OpenAI News. Study Mode is a set of instructions students can switch off, not a lock. Google's r/AISEOInsider, announced September 15, adds voice chat in about 100 languages and new quiz formats.

Provenance, media and money

The Verge used Google's SynthID Detector to find Verge · AI that Trump posted. The restoration work is real. Sega Verge · AI after players flagged art artifacts and bugs. Verge · AI, the Sam Altman film Amazon dropped, on December 25. According to people briefed, Anthropic told investors that Simon Willison, about 45% above Q2, after it cut back distillation by rival labs.

  1. Practical AI hosts say schools lag AI-era work, citing study where an unrestricted GPT-4 chatbot cut later exam scores 17%

How a tutor is built around the model mattered more than the model itself. In a peer-reviewed field experiment with nearly 1,000 Turkish high-school math students, open GPT-4 access raised practice scores by 48% but lowered later no-AI exam scores by 17%. A tutor version that gave hints instead of answers avoided that harm. A separate randomized crossover trial with 194 Harvard physics students used a structured GPT-4 tutor built on expert-written prompts. It produced more than double the learning gains of an active-learning class across two lessons. Both studies show that scores measured while students have AI can mislead, and that a later test without AI is what reveals real learning.

  2. Meta releases Muse Spark Open, an 816B-parameter open-weight model that runs on linked Mac Studios

The model can run locally on Apple hardware. Apple's MLX tests used a 4-bit NVFP4 build that took about 493GB on each machine. Two M5 Ultra Mac Studios decoded about 15.7 tokens per second, and four reached about 36.7. The 512GB configurations that the two-machine setup needs are due in late October, and Apple has not announced their price.

  3. Reddit post and video lay out a Claude-run SEO playbook credited with taking a new site to 1,300 daily clicks

The build steps are a fast static site (Eleventy on Netlify), one keyword per URL that never changes, sitemaps submitted on day one, and Claude publishing content directly from code. Search Console data feeds the agent, which writes more content around pages that are gaining impressions.

  9. Google launches Gemini 4 Argon for robotics; it ranks third of five on Artificial Analysis's real-arm benchmark

Argon is not a dedicated robot-action model. It works through code and tools: it builds MuJoCo scenes from camera footage, human video or sketches, labels demonstrations, estimates task progress and drives arms through a fixed set of preset motion commands. In one demo, about 4,500 simulated episodes made from a single tabletop photo were used to fine-tune a vision-language-action model, and real-robot success rose from 56% to 75%.
